The calf jacket

I really like calf jackets on young calves. Especially in cold conditions, in well-ventilated sheds for the first three to four weeks. The general rule with calf jackets is that you get what you pay for. They are a long-term investment so it is worth investing in quality if they fit in with your needs to raise healthy young calves.

It is always worth having one eye on weather forecast when assessing cold calves. It might be worth considering a thermometer in the shed. Calves under three to four weeks below 10°C have to start burning extra energy to stay warm.

So when will you need to use calf jackets?

Always make sure they are breathable and only place them on a dry calf. Wash (hot wash between calves) and generally remove after three weeks or four to five weeks if severely cold.
